How to prepare for the hectic weather in Spain
The weather in Spain has been very hectic over the past few weeks. But what factors play a big role in the bad weather, and what can we do to avoid getting soaked?
Storm Konrad
Storm Konrad is currently impacting Spain with severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, strong winds, and snowfall in various regions. It is the eleventh major storm of the season and has brought significant disruptions. In Andalusia, heavy rainfall has been reported, with some areas receiving between 50 to 100 mm of rain. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued weather alerts for 29 provinces, warning of potential flooding, high waves, and hazardous travel conditions.
Mediterranean sea
The Mediterranean Sea contributes to the formation of rain. This is because the water is relatively warm, even in the colder months. Warm water surfaces cause more evaporation, making the air more humid. When this moist air meets a colder front or is lifted by the mountains, the water vapor condenses and falls as rain. This process is one of the main reasons for the showers that often occur in autumn and winter.
Location
The geography of Fuengirola and Mijas further amplifies these effects. Nearby mountain ranges like the Sierra de Mijas force moist air from the sea upward as it moves inland. This process, known as orographic lift, cools the air even more and causes heavy rain to fall on the coastal side of the mountains.
Climate change
Climate change is amplifying extreme weather events worldwide. Southern Spain is no exception. For example, warmer temperatures can lead to more intense rainfall, as warmer air retains more moisture. In addition, storms often become more intense and longer-lasting.
What can you do about it?
